Defender Bird Deterrent Products & Installation  FAQ’s

What’s included in a Defender Bird Spike kit?

All Defender Bird Deterrent Spike Kits contain:

  • Plastic or stainless steel bird and pigeon spikes ranging from 4 ft to 1000 ft kits.
  • For packs that include silicone, enough silicone will be enclosed to complete the job of installation.
  • A FREE installation booklet gives helpful hints and tips on how easy Defender spikes are to install.
  • All the Defender Bird Spike products come with a warranty from 15 to 25 years.
  • Delivery is FREE, no matter what size kit or number of kits you have ordered.

What’s the difference between plastic and stainless steel pigeon spikes?

There is very little difference between our Defender 4™ plastic pigeon spike and our Defender 4™ stainless steel bird spikes. They both protect ledges up to 4 inches in depth, however the stainless steel version is considered slightly less visible and comes with a 25 year “No Rust” warranty whereas the plastic spike has a 15 year warranty.

Do I have to use the included Defender Silicone Adhesive to install bird spikes?

We recommend using the Defender Silicone Glue as it has been specially formulated to create a strong bond with the bases of our Defender Bird Spike range. However, they can also be fixed to surfaces using screws or nails or zip ties if a less permanent fix is required.

Do I need to hire a professional bird control company to fit bird spikes?

No, if you have basic home improvement skills and are safe using ladders, you can quickly and easily install the Defender range of bird spikes. No specialist knowledge or tools are needed, no complicated measurements are made. The bird spikes are simply snapped by hand to size and fixed to a clean, dry surface using the included Defender Silicone Adhesive. The only extra tool necessary for the larger kits is a caulking gun.

Do bird spikes hurt the birds?

Bird and pigeon spikes do not hurt birds, they act as a visual and physical barrier. Bird spikes are a humane bird deterrent as the bird doesn’t come into direct contact with the bird spikes. They are endorsed by PiCAS USA, PETA and the Humane Society of America.

Should I only proof the ledge the birds are currently sat on?

Pigeons and birds are creatures of habit and will try to return to a preferred area every day. If the area they perch on has had bird spikes installed, they will simply move to the next available ledge be it a pipe or gutter or aerial. It is best to spike every conceivable ledge on your property to ensure pigeons will not return.

Is netting better than spiking?

Some professional bird control companies suggest netting off areas rather than using bird spikes. In our experience netting (polypropylene) degrades quickly in outdoor weather conditions. It is also a costly method that needs constant maintenance. The main reason however, is that birds and pigeons can become trapped within and behind the netting. If this is not spotted quickly, the birds will die of starvation.

Bird Deterrents & Bird Control Issues FAQ’s

What causes a bird infestation?

Generally, pigeons like an easy life. If they can find a sheltered perch that is high up enabling them to view the surrounding area, they are happy. They will look out for predators but more importantly, food sources. Pigeons congregate in areas where they can access sustained persistent feeding, usually by a small number of individuals in parks and domestic gardens or areas where rubbish bins regularly overflow such as behind fast food restaurants.

Do they work for other birds other than pigeons?

The Defender Bird Spike range is designed for pigeons and like sized birds. The length of the pins are designed to deter pigeon sized birds. Larger birds, such as seagulls may overcome the pins and smaller birds may be able to perch between the pins.

Do pigeons and birds carry diseases?

All birds have the potential to carry disease but it is quite difficult to directly transfer to humans. If ingested, pigeon and bird excrement can cause mild stomach upsets. If dried pigeon droppings are inhaled, it could aggravate the lungs and cause mild respiratory problems. It is advisable when dealing and cleaning areas that are frequented by birds and pigeons to wear suitable clothing such as overalls, gloves and dust masks. Also make sure that hands are washed after touching, moving and cleaning pigeon and bird droppings.
